Weekly FACT
LURC’s CLUP (Comprehensive Land Use Plan) states that one of LURC’s primary goals is to guide new development to areas deemed appropriate for development. Plum Creek’s Plan is designed to help fulfill this goal. For example, one of the factors described in the CLUP is that development must be in close proximity to organized towns and centers of population., with access to major roads.

81% of the proposed lots lie within an eight mile radius of Jackman, Rockwood, Greenville, and Kokadjo, some of the region’s most developed areas.

Two major access routes serve Plum Creek’s land. About 74% of all proposed development is within a 3-mile corridor on each side of Route 6/15 and the Lily Bay Road. Development beyond these relatively narrow corridors is only proposed on already developed lakes, accessible by existing woods roads.

Your Chance to Suggest Changes
As reported in earlier newsletters, the LURC Issue Scoping Sessions were opportunities for Plum Creek to hear concerns from the people of Maine about their Plan.

Plum Creek listened, and they are continuing to listen through a process of meetings with individuals and groups around the state. Changes in the Plan are being considered based on what Plum Creek has heard.

Now it’s your turn. What would you like to see different in the Plan? What changes do you think would make the Plan better? What are your main concerns with the Plan, and how would you address those concerns?

Your comments will be collected and presented to Plum Creek by Coalition Co-Chairs Mark Scarano and Jim Batey.

Please email your ideas to: info@preservegrowme.org , or mail them to: Coalition to Preserve and Grow Northern Maine P.O. Box 944 Greenville, Maine 04441.

It’s important to Plum Creek that Maine people, with Maine’s best interests at heart, play a lead role in making the Plum Creek Plan the most effective Plan it can be in balancing conservation, working forests and economic development.

Please send in your comments. If you have any questions, contact the Coalition Information Center at 1-888-702-7466.

Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine
Please continue to write letters to the editor denouncing the recent vandalism. Below is the statement sent to the media by the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine:

We are outraged by the attacks on Plum Creek’s staff, homes, and offices. This is not the Maine we know. These attacks mark a very sad time in Maine’s history.

We ask the police agencies of Maine, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to put all of their resources into capturing and prosecuting these eco-terrorists. They cannot possibly be people who care anything about our state.

Maine sportsmen know these people well. Five years ago, eco-terrorists trashed four Maine fish and game clubs. At the Phippsburg Fish and Game Club, these criminals set up the club’s propane system to blow up – and only the quick thinking of a club member/fireman who disabled the system prevented someone from being killed.

No one was ever prosecuted for these crimes, although an international organization, the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), claimed credit.

These eco-terrorists are dangerous and they must be condemned in the strongest possible language by Maine’s political, conservation, environmental, and business leaders.

We ask all to join SAM in sending a clear message: violence in the name of environmentalism is intolerable and not the Maine way.

Our thoughts are with the Plum Creek staff today, as they struggle to maintain their lives in an increasing environment of hate and violence aimed at them.

This must be stopped.
